Railway officials call high-level meeting in Ranchi after train sabotage

RANCHI - Railway officials have called a high-level meeting in Ranchi to take stock of safety of tracks in the wake of Friday’s Gyaneshwari Express train derailment, which has claimed over 140 lives till date.
“We have discussed in detail in the meeting that we together with the vigilance and state police will try to ply trains safely,” said V.K. Agarwal, Divisional Railway Manager of Ranchi zone.
Meanwhile, Jharkhand Director General of Police (DGP) Niaz Ahmed said the state police is working out strategies to counter the Maoist threat.
“Maoists are planting landmines in large numbers. Landmines are their main weapons. We have our strategy how to overcome this and we are working on that,” said Niaz Ahmed.
At least 290 others injured in the mishap are being treated at different hospitals in Midnapore, Kharagpur, Jhargram and Kolkata.
The incident occurred at around 1: 30 a.m. on Friday near Jhargram in West Bengal’s West Midnapore District, when the Mumbai-bound train was running between Khemasoli and Sardiya stations. (ANI)
