Sonia Gandhi to meet Telugu star Chiranjeevi today

NEW DELHI - Telugu cine star and Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) president Chiranjeevi is meeting Congress president Sonia Gandhi here on Saturday.

Chiranjeevi is expected to meet Sonia Gandhi around 7.30 p.m. at her 10 Janpath road residence.

The meeting gained significance in the wake of Congress MP and former Chief Minister Y S Rajshekhar Reddy’s son Y S Jaganmohan Reddy defying the Party orders and decided to go ahead with his planned ‘Odarpu Yatra,’ which has caused a lot of violence in the Telangana region.

Speaking to a private news channel Chiranjeevi confirmed that he would be meeting Sonia Gandhi, but denied reports of merging his party with the Congress.

The Praja Rajyam Party, which has 18 MLAs in the 295-member Andhra Pradesh Assembly, is keen on contesting the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections.

Unless the Congress supports it, the party cannot realize its dream of winning a seat as a minimum of 42 votes are required for a candidate to get elected to the Rajya Sabha.

Chiranjeevi held a prolonged meeting with his party colleagues before leaving Hyderabad.

The Praja Rajyam Party feels that if the friendship with Congress is established for the Rajya Sabha elections, it could be firmed up for the upcoming elections to urban local bodies in the state. (ANI)
