Rajiv Gandhi Remembered By Nation

NEW DELHI, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- Today the country is observing Anti-terrorism day which also happens to be the 19th death anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi, the late PM of India. The Home ministry made a statement on Thursday saying that this day is meant for making the residents and especially the young population of the country aware about the danger of resorting to violence and terrorism. A lot of colleges and universities have planned to arrange discussions and debates on the topic today nationwide. It is quite well known that Rajiv Gandhi was killed by LTTE assassins in 1991 when he was campaigning in Sriperumbudur in Tamilnadu.
On the eve of his death anniversary, President Pratibha Devisingh Patil, Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh, Vice-President Hamid Ansari and the other members of Gandhi family including his widow and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi paid floral tributes to his memorial named veer bhumi. His children Priyanka Vadra, her spouse Robert Vadra and son, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi was also there to pay homage to the leader. A number of prominent Congress leaders and Home Minister P Chidambaram also paid their tributes to Rajiv Gandhi.
The opposition party leaders also paid their homage to Rajiv Gandhi at his memorial. Congress party has planned for a series of programs to mark the ceremony. Pledges against terrorism will be taken in Government offices on the day. Rajiv Gandhi was the youngest PM of the nation and he was known for his gentleman politician image. He took several steps in combating terror and taking the country forward in his tenure.
