BARAARA - People of a village near Rae Bareily blocked the passage of Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Monday to demand the construction of a proper barrier at a nearby railway crossing.

Gandhi was returning after an inaugural ceremony of the newly constructed Wi-Max services of the state-run telecommunication service BSNL.

While passing a railway crossing near Baraara, she was stopped by a large group of people who demanded the construction of a proper barrier at the crossing so that bigger vehicles like trucks and buses can easily cross the railway line.

Gandhi interacted with the locals and gave them the assurance for speedy construction of a barrier at the railway crossing.

Earlier, Gandhi slammed the Mayawati-led Uttar Pradesh government over its step-motherly treatment towards Rae Bareily and Amethi despite the Central government’s ample support.

Gandhi said: “It is the responsibility of the state government, but you know what the attitude of the state government has been towards Rae Bareli and Amethi.”

Rae Bareily is Sonia’s parliamentary constituency and Amethi happens to be her son Rahul Gandhi’s constituency.

Today she is expected to meet people of her constituency and also address the party workers. (ANI)
