MANHATTAN (GaeaTimes.com) — The car carrying gas cans that caused menace in the Union Square was declared all-clear by police and Bomb Squad experts today. The car was loaded with couple of 5-gallon gas cans in the back seat and created much panic among the residents of Manhattan’s Union Square on Thursday.
The suspicious car prompted evacuation of 600 people from several floors of a building. Streets were blocked which in turn prevented hundreds of punk-rock fans from attending a live concert at Irving Plaza.
A Con Ed worker first noticed the gas container in the car, parked in front of a building at 4 Irving Place. He called up cops at 10:16 p.m. The cops accompanied by Bomb Squad experts arrived and began searching the 1992 Oldsmobile. The drama lasted for more than two hours until the cops tracked down the owner of the vehicle.
The owner of the car, who had been at the concert by the British punk band the Buzzcocks was taken aback by the whole incident. “What happened! What happened!” he quizzed police. “What’s wrong? I didn’t do anything.”
Finally, police found no malicious intent and gave a green signal to the owner of the car.
