Prisoners undergo training for ‘meaty’ jobs in Punjab

Ludhiana, May 13 (ANI): Trying their hand at various meat processing technologies, inmates lodged in the Central Jail of Ludhiana actively participated in a unique workshop conducted for them on Wednesday.

Organized by the Central Institute of Post Harvest Engineering and Technology (CIPHET), the workshop aimed at training prisoners in order to sustain themselves after their release from jail.

Experts from CIPHET gave live demonstrations to the inmates on various meat processing technologies.

Highlighting the employment related problems faced by prisoners after their release from custody, Dr. R. T. Patil of CIPHET said the training would enable prisoners to be employed by producing meat-based products.

“For those inmates who are genuinely interested, we will provide a detailed training session for two-three days more. After the completion, the prisoners would receive certificates that would help them when they look for jobs. They can either work in various food processing industries which require manpower, or be self-employed,” said Patil.

The training classes would be held every month within the jail premises, said police sources.

Prisoners were visibly excited with the plethora of future prospects that the workshop seemed to open up for them.

“The food was delicious. I learnt a lot from the demonstration, and would start my own food processing venture after my jail term ends,” said Baldev Kumar, a prisoner.

The aim of the workshop is to help inmates be gainfully self-employed, and throws open a variety of employment opportunities for them especially in the small-scale sector. (ANI)
