NHRC issues notice to Gujarat Govt. over students walking on cinders incident

New Delhi, May 11 (ANI): Natonal Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Gujarat Government over an incident wherein school children were allegedly forced to walk on burning coal and broken glass pieces.

Taking a suo motu cognigance of a media report alleging that a school namely River Dale at Surat in Gujarat forced its students to walk on the burning coal and broken glass pieces in the name of building their confidence, the National Human Rights Commission issued the notice for explanation.

The incident reportedly occurred on April 20th April, 2010, during a two-day night camp for students.

Observing that the contents of the press report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of children’s human rights and their physical torture, and thus the Commission has issued a notice to he Secretary (Primary Education), Government of Gujarat, on May 7, 2010, seeking a factual report in the matter within four weeks.
