MUMBAI, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- The residents of Mumbai are in a troubled situation as the train strike continues in its second day. Tuesday brought utter chaos and woe for nearly 7 million commuters which included the students and office goers. The suburban train services in Mumbai were paralyzed for the second consecutive day. As everyone knows, the strike has been called by the motormen who operate the trains. At least 600 motormen belonging to the Central Railway and Western Railway have joined the strike which has brought the suburban train service in Mumbai on its knees.
The motorman running the suburban rail network in Mumbai are demanding a hike in pay and they also have some other demands. They started the strike on Monday morning and it caught the commuters by surprise when they ventured out for their offices and destinations. The situation has turned really critical and the CM of the state Ashok Chavan said in his statement that he will get in touch with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to resolve the crisis. The situation became worse on Tuesday as the majority of the suburban trains had to be cancelled.
The railways resorted to some stop gap solutions in Mumbai but they could not resolve the crisis. The commuters were allowed to travel in long distance trains and those trains were made to stop at all stations. The rail strike took its toll on the roads of Mumbai too. The stranded commuters opted for the bus service and traffic snarls were seen everywhere. Chances are there that the State government may impose the ESMA act to resolve the crisis.
