Masters programme in Geoinformatics in Kashmir University finds many takers

Srinagar, Apr 30 (ANI): With the threat of global warming growing, a newly introduced course, Geoinformatics, is attracting the attention of youth in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Kashmir University (KU) has introduced a Masters programme in Geoinformatics, a frontier field of Science, at the Department of Geology and Geophysics from the academic session 2010-11.
The KU also started the PG Diploma in Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) in the year 2004.
Shakeel A Ramshoo, programme coordinator of KU said that the goal is to enhance the understanding and subsequent use of Space Technology, IT and GIS for socio-economic environmental-friendly development of the state.
“Geoinformatics is a multi field which covers space technology, information technology, Geographic Information System (GIS), computer science, and with which we can solve the problem of earth resources,” Ramshoo added.
Students say that the course would help generate interest in environmental issues.
“In the last couple of years, we have been seeing in the media and various other sources, the phenomena of global warming, about our Dal Lake, shrinking of water table, pollution…all these are involved with nature. All these things attracts us towards the nature and the subject which we have taken, M.Sc in Geoinformatics, we can try our bit for the betterment and survival of these things,” said Muzaffar Ahmad, a student.
The course is also highly job-oriented with 100 percent job placement. The students who graduated in the past five batches of the PG Diploma have been well placed in various government and private sectors.
The department has developed high-class infrastructure for offering the best possible education, research and applications in Geoinformatics to participants across varied backgrounds. (ANI)
