CHENNAI - Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) General Secretary Vaiko went on a hunger strike on Thursday in Chennai to condemn the “insensitive” deportation of Parvathi, the mother of slain Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) leader V. Prabakaran.

He accused the state government of being inhuman and said Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi’s action was a ‘betrayal’.

“Knowing pretty well that Parvathi is going to arrive at Chennai airport, Karunanidhi gave instructions to the police officials not to allow Vaiko and Tamil Nationalist Movement leader P. Neduraman even to approach the airport area,” said Vaiko.

“I accuse that due to instructions and steps taken by Karunanidhi, Prahakaran’s mother was sent back with inhuman attitude for which we condemn the action of the government, and also the betrayal committed by the Chief Minister,” he added.

Over the weekend, Vaiko had accused police personnel of manhandling him when he visited Chennai Airport on Friday night along with Nedumaran to receive Parvathi.

Seventy nine-year-old Parvathi had arrived in Chennai from Kuala Lumpur, but was deported by immigration officials.

The Tamil Nadu Government has said it had no role to play in the deportation. (ANI)
