Hundreds of shanties gutted in New Delhi

NEW DELHI - Over hundreds of shanties were burnt down due to a huge fire that broke out early on Sunday morning in New Delhi’s Shalimar Bagh locality.

Reportedly, the fire broke out at around 3 a.m. and engulfed the entire locality.

At least 30 fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse out the flames.

It was reported that the firemen took over an hour and a half to bring the blaze under control.

“The fire call was at 4 a.m. This are has approximately 400 shanties, this is a confined area, a type of park, which has JJ clusters in it. Reasons of fire are not yet known, but we do not have reports of any casualties till now,” said Dr. Than Singh Sharma, Divisional Fire Officer, Delhi Fire Service.

Locals claimed their shanties could have been saved, if they would have got timely help.

“The landlord did not give any facility of water supply. There was no electricity even the fire brigades came very late. It came when all the shanties were brunt. There is no help form anybody,” claimed Manoj, a resident.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.

So far, no casualties have been reported but there has been a huge loss of property. (ANI)
