CHENNAI - Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Sunday said that the Centre would bring the comprehensive Right to Food Act before the Parliament soon.

Addressing a programme here, Chidambaram said the Government is working on the Act and would introduce it soon.

“After the Right to Information Act, Right to Work Act and t eRight to Education Act, the Government is working on a Right to Food Act, which will be enforced soon,” Chidambaram said.

He claimed the Congress-led UPA Government’s rights based approach has ensured faster economic growth, benefiting all sections of society in the country.

On education, Chidambaram said the disbursement of loans and scholarships to students, especially the Dalits, has reached “unprecedented levels” under the UPA government.

In 2008-2009, education loans worth Rs 25,000 crore were disbursed to poor students and this figure was expected to go up to Rs 45,000 crore during 2009-2010, benefiting about 2.5 million students, he said.
