Day of Silence Observed By GLSEN

NEW JERSEY (GaeaTimes.com)- Day of Silence is being observed across all the major schools of United States on April 16th which takes up one of the most challenging issues in today’s world. Day of Silence happens to be the 15th annual Day of Silence observed by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) which aims at taking up a very sensitive issue of gay individual harassment which has been a common case in major American schools. The Day of Silence 2010 shall have 6000 American schools participating in this event which aims at bringing all forces together to make schools a better place for all gay individuals. Day of Silence also takes into concern all cases where the LGBT( Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) youths have complained of physical assault and abuses that they have been subjected to.
The executive director of Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network(GLSEN), Eliza Byard said that a survey conducted in the year of 2009 reported that 86.2% of LGBTs had been subjected to verbal abuse while 44.1% of LGBT youths has gone ahead to witness severe physical assault which have triggered major criticisms in different strata of the society.
Day of Silence was first observed by University of Virginia. Following that, GLSEN came up in the year 200o which marked the Day of Silence to be regarded as one of the most important day in the American calendar. Speaking of 15th Day of Silence, the director of GLSEN told the media that she is happy to witness an active participation from all major schools of the country which is definitely very inspiring and she considers this as a major move in achieving what the organization seeks to achieve.
