AMRITSAR - The Customs Department seized six kilograms of heroin from courier service provider’s office in Amritsar.
According to officials, the value of the narcotic seized is estimated to be around Rs 300 million in the international market. The drug consignment was to be sent to Vancouver, Canada, by courier.
“We have seized a drug consignment. The modus operandi, which we have uncovered is little unusual. The drug was wrapped in yoga carpets and was to be sent to Vancouver, Canada,” said S M Akhtar, Additional Commissioner of Customs Department, Amritsar.
“If our officers had not caught them, they would have been successful,” he added.
Akhtar noted that the sender’s address mentioned on the consignment was fake and further investigations were being carried out.
He also opined that the culprit must have received some help from across the India-Pakistan International Border as the department also recovered fake currency notes amounting to Rs 100,000 from one Rajiv Aggarwal in the follow-up action.
Akhtar added that during the search of Aggarwal’s residence in New Delhi, more fake currency, amounting to Rs 99,700 was also recovered.
“I think there was some help from across the (International) Border. We have arrested a person in fake currency case. I refuse to believe that there was no help from across the Border,” Akhtar said.
The Department has refused to give out the name of the accused and details of their arrest, saying that revelations may hamper the investigation process.(ANI)
