Tharoor urges Sibal to intervene to solve Kerala college teachers’ problems

NEW DELHI - Not deterred by controversies surrounding him as Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor has written a letter to Union Human Resource Minister Kapil Sibal urging him to intervene to resolve long pending issue of Kerala college teachers.

Kerala College teachers have been demanding an increase in their retirement age from 55 to 65 years.

In his letter Tharoor has drawn Sibal’s attention to the fact that the Kerala Government is yet to raise the superannuation age of college teachers despite the University Grants Commission (UGC) making a recommendation in this regard.

“College teachers in Kerala, both in government and private colleges, have been demanding raising of retirement age from 55 to 65. UGC has forwarded a package to the state government recommending that the retirement age be raised. But the Kerala government has not accepted the recommendations,” Tharoor stated in his letter.

Tharoor alleged that Government’s failure to look into the matter has resulted in considerable loss of morale among teaching community.

Central Government colleges and most of the State Government colleges have already implemented 65 as the age for retirement. (ANI)
