Taxi driver attacked in New Zealand’s Christchurch city

CHRISTCHURCH - Police in the Christchurch suburb of Shirley are appealing for witnesses after a taxi driver was threatened with a knife by two passengers in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The First Direct taxi driver picked up two male passengers at 5.45am on Shirley Rd and Quinns Rd and drove down Hope St, Emmett St, Briggs Rd, Philpotts Rd. Queen Elizabeth II Dr and Grimseys Rd.
During the journey, the men threatened to kill the driver using a knife, hit him and grabbed him around the throat while he was driving.
The driver was struck on back of his head causing him to crash into two trees on Queen Elizabeth II Dr near Grimseys Rd.
The driver received concussion and sore head and neck as a result of the assault.
The attack comes days after Transport Minister Stephen Joyce announced a proposal to make in-vehicle security cameras compulsory for all taxis in New Zealand.
The proposal will go before Cabinet in May. (ANI)
