Imperative for US to continue focusing on safety of Pak’s nuke establishments: Curtis

WASHINGTON - The upcoming nuclear security summit here is of much significance for both Pakistan and the United States, as the Obama Administration, time and again, has pressed Islamabad to ensure the safety of its nuclear establishments amidst heightened threats from the Taliban and Al-Qaeda.
According to Lisa Curtis, Senior Research Fellow for South Asia in the Asian Studies Center at The Heritage Foundation, more than the threat posed by the extremists, it’s the nefarious links between former Pakistani officials and nuclear scientists with access to nuclear information with Taliban and al-Qaeda terrorists, which threatens the region as well as the whole world.
Curtis highlighted that it is imperative for Washington, which has spent over 100 million dollars over the last eight years under programmes aimed at improving the safety and security of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons programs, to continue to focus on the safety of the troubled country’s nuclear arsenals.
“U.S. policy should continue to focus on preventing the possible penetration of Pakistan’s nuclear establishment by individuals sympathetic to Al-Qaeda goals,” Curtis said. (ANI)
