Tulip growers in Kashmir hope for rich dividends

SRINAGAR - The tulip growers in Kashmir are enthusiastic since an ace floriculturist from Holland has educated them about innovative methods to have a good harvest. Today, they are all set to hit the market with their produce.

Under the guidance of Henk Van Voorbergen, a tulip expert from Holland, the tulip growers in Kashmir have learnt various new techniques.

It occurred for the first time that cut flowers of Kashmiri tulips are ready to hit the national market with the help of high-tech poly houses. This could be made possible due to the initiative of the Jammu and Kashmir State government’s initiative and inviting the expert from Holland.

Even during off-season, they will be able to grow tulips, courtesy the poly houses.

In the valley, the local tulip growers are now confident of growing a quality produce and also market their flowers at par with global trends.

Henk Van Voorbergen said that the tulips grown by the Kashmiri floriculturist are ready to hit the market and fetch them good profits.

“They are ready to hit the national market and it is in comparison with other qualities from all over the world. What I have seen now, it has developed beyond my expectations,” said Henk Van Voorbergen.

Fayaz Ahmad, a tulip grower, said that now floriculturists in the valley region are confident of optimum gains since they have learnt from the Dutch expert latest innovative modes of growing tulips.

“We have also grown tulips with the help of the department and today they have plucked tulips here. We were also trained by foreign expert who taught us as to how to reap it, how to make bunches and how to present them in market. We learnt all these and now we have also grown tulips. Our tulips would come in eight to ten days. This is a matter of great pleasure that commercial tulip growers have come up as well and it will reach the market earlier this time,” said Fayaz Ahmad.

Kashmiri tulips are regarded as the best in Asia. The tulip gardens in the valley are very popular among the tourists. The tulip season usually commences in the month of April. By Afzal hat (ANI)
