Breeding of captive exotic birds increases Chennai’s bird population

CHENNAI - The captive breeding of exotic birds, including the imported ones, has increased Chennai’s bird population.
Many of them have been bred them in backyards, farms, aviaries and house terraces.
The birds are popular due to their colour and exuberant looks. Bird lovers have got special permission to breed exotic birds in their farms.
Satyanarayanan, a bird lover, said the people were now breeding the birds in their homes.
“These foreign birds once upon a time were only accessible to rich people but now the situation has changed and more and more people are buying them and keeping them at their homes and not only that are also breeding them at their homes,” said Satyanarayanan.
“I have collection of various birds in my home and it’s very unique in the sense that I feel mental peace and happiness because we generally see these bird in the zoo but now it is not like that,” said Basker another bird lover.
Studies have shown that keeping these pet birds helps to relieve stress to those who like having birds around.
The price of the birds ranges from 22 US dollars to 4,404 US dollars in the market. (ANI)
