Maoist leader surrenders in Orissa

KEONJHAR - The surrender policy known locally as ‘Ghara Bahuda’ mooed by the Orissa Government is yielding desired result, as Maoist leader Suresh Sundi laid down his arms and surrendered before the authorities on Thursday.

He was the head of the banned outfit operating in Mayurbhanj district, and surrendered to the police in Keonjhar district.

Reportedly, Sundi had joined the rebels in 2007 underwent training in operation of assorted arms and allied strategies.

He was involved in the killing of a forest officer, torching of religious place and explosions.

“We found that the tribals are being caught and jailed. Nothing good has happened to them. We saw nothing can be achieved through violence. So, I decided to come to mainstream to live happily,” Sundi said after surrendering.

Ashish Singh, Superintendent of Police of Keonjhar, mentioned that Sundi would get all the facilities provided by the state government under the surrender and rehabilitation policy.

“Maoist’s ideology is illusionary. They (Maoists) bring people to their fold by motivating them, by instigating them. When they (tribals) live with them (Maoist) they realise the truth and they feel like going back to mainstream of society,” Singh said.

“The surrender policy provides them an opportunity to return to the mainstream of society taking this opportunity they are surrendering,” he added. (ANI)
