NEW DELHI - The armed forces are short of a staggering 14,448 officers, parliament was informed Wednesday.
“There has been a shortage of officers in the armed forces. The shortage of officers in the army is around 11,500 and in the navy, the shortage is 1,606,” Defence Minister A.K. Antony said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.
The air force is short of 1,342 officers, he added.
“The shortage is partly attributable to accretions in the armed forces from time to time, tough selection procedures, difficult service conditions coupled with perceived high degree of risk involved in service career,” he said.
