NEW DELHI - Having previously given the UPA government some relief on the issue of holding discussion on price rise under rule 193 without necessitating voting for the matter, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Opposition demonstrated an unprecedented unanimity in staging a walk out from Lok Sabha in opposition to the General Budget presented here on Friday in Parliament.

It was for the first time ever that during any Budget presentation, the entire opposition walked out of the Lok Sabha in protest against Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s move to increase excise duty of Re. 1 per litre on petrol and diesel.

Talking to mediapersons, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and BJP leader Sushma Swaraj said: “BJP stages walkout in protest against “inflationary budget.”

Communist Party of India (CPI) leader Gurudas Das Gupta, meanwhile said, “We are in total opposition to Pranab’s Budget”.

Samajwadi leader Mulayam Singh said the entire opposition will launch a joint agitation against the move.

“The entire Opposition will hit the streets soon against the Government’s policies and will enlighten the general pubic. This is for the first time the entire Opposition parties have walked out,” said Mr. Yadav. (ANI)
