SRINAGAR - Hundreds of protestors including women staged a demonstration against the arrest of a local youth in Mysooma region of Srinagar on Tuesday.

Police booked a local youth, Owais Ahmed alias Mandela, under the Public Safety Act for his alleged involvement in stone-throwing incidents on Saturday.

He was later shifted to Kot Bhalwal jail in Jammu.

Protestors, including kin and family members of Mandela, tried to block the traffic movement before police prevented them.

Police also lobbed teargas shells and swung batons to disperse the agitating protestors.

Protestors demanded immediate release of Mandela.

“This protest is not for my brother, it is for all innocent victims…today they (security) personnel pick up my brother, tomorrow they pick someone else…my brother is in Jammu, that is why we are staging the protest. We will continue our protest till my brother release,” said Nuzhat, sister of the accused.

In recent months, there have been many instances of locals taking to the streets to protest killings or arrests of their kin by the security forces.(ANI)
