Northeast cultural event held at Delhi IIT

NEW DELHI - Cultural troupes from the eight northeastearn states presented a variety of folk dances to an audience here recently.

The northeast cultural event was held at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Delhi as a part of the ongoing Virasat series organized by the Society for Promotion Indian Classical Music and Culture amongst Youth (SPIC MACAY).

The programme sought to foster the exchange of traditional values and to generate awareness of he culture of northeast to people in other parts of India.

It was a unique treat for the audience, who thoroughly enjoyed the performance.

“They have brought something that many people aren’t aware of. We have seen beautiful colours. For me, the performance that I like the most is the drum dance from Manipur,” said a member of the audience.

“It was really good. Especially, as an artist, if audience likes our performance then, we feel nice and worth our effort,” said Karma Lepcha, an artist.

During the event, the Octave group from Northeast, which mostly consists of young artists, presented different folk dances.

The majestic masked Lion dance or Singhi Chham folk dance of Sikkim was performed by Sikkimese troupes, who were attired in flashing silks, opulent brocades and embroidered boots.ther captivating performances like Drum dance, Radha-Krishna dance, Bamboo dance, Martial arts and others were also showcased during the occasion.

“If there is more of music, dance, interactions and Northeast troupes came here and vice-versa, it’ll be good. Insurgency is due to more of distrust and misunderstanding and it can be reduced through such cultural event. There will be more of harmony. It’ll promote harmony and sense of togetherness,” said Kiran Seth, festival organizer.

“People should engage in cultural activities. Young people should be encouraged. That way, situation will be improved. In many ways, we have problems because people aren’t engaged in activities,” said Chembem Lotha an artist.

The show culminated with the combined performance of all dance forms on a single platform that reflected unity and harmony. By Karam Roniya (ANI)
