UN nuke agency worried Iran working on nuke weapon
VIENNA — The U.N. nuclear agency says it’s worried that Iran may currently be experimenting with ways to turn enriched uranium into a nuclear weapon.
The U.S. has said it believes that the Islamic Republic stopped such experiments several years ago. It is currently taking a fresh look at that assessment.
This is the first time that the International Atomic Energy Agency has made such concerns public.
Iran itself denies ever experimenting with the techniques to make and deliver nuclear warheads. A U.S. intelligence assessment published in November 2007 said the nation had such programs but appeared to have suspended them in 2003.
Germany, Britain and other nations have suggested their intelligence supports fears that Iran may have continued such work into 2004 and beyond.
