GORAKHPUR - Peeved at the menace spurious liquor has created in their village, residents in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur district recently attacked an illegal liquor-manufacturing unit in Gulhariya area and destroyed it.
These local people, including the children, youngsters and the elderly, were agitated because the spurious liquor consumption here has already cost many lives in the recent past. Hence they decided to attack the manufacturing point.
The group searched for the raw materials used in illegally brewed liquor and took away rectified spirit and bottles of Mahua (a form of country liquor) from the unit. Later, they deposited all the recovered material with the Gulhariya police station after which the police officials lodged a formal complaint.
Villagers lamented the local administration’s ignorance of their concern. They claimed to have complained to police many a times against this illicit establishment but the police never bothered.
“We had come to the area police station to complain about the troubles the villagers are facing because of the illegal liquor manufacturing in the area. The police had then assured us that within eight days the unit will be closed. However, nothing happened and eventually our village team raided the manufacturing unit. Whatever illegal substances were recovered we then deposited them with the area police station,” said Ghanshyam, a resident of Gulhariya.
“We are putting pressure on the police but they are not doing anything about it. The constables just take bribe from the liquor manufacturers and let this business flourish in the area,” Ghanshyam added.
The business of spurious liquor manufacturing has existed in the district for 40 years. By Pawan Shah(ANI)
