Officials: British man detained in Gaza
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip — Officials say a British man has been arrested by Hamas security forces in Gaza.
Hamas police spokesman Ehab Ghussein said the man was a journalist. He said the Briton is under suspicion of breaking the law, but did not elaborate. The man’s name was not released.
The British consulate in Jerusalem confirmed the arrest, but did not confirm the man was a journalist.
A spokesman for the Abu Rish Brigades says the man was detained at a Gaza courthouse Sunday. The spokesman says the journalist was there to show support for a member of the Palestinian militant group who was on trial for allegedly providing information to Israel.
Hamas wants to improve its image in the West and generally has not interfered with the work of foreign journalists.
