Commission to report on Honduran coup in 4 months
TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras — Former Guatemalan Vice President Eduardo Stein says a truth commission being formed in Honduras to investigate the events that led to the ouster of President Manuel Zelaya will present its findings in June.
Stein is to be the chairman of the panel. He said Wednesday it will be formally established later this month and will include two Hondurans and three more foreigners.
Honduras’ army flew Zelaya out of the country last June after he pushed ahead with plans for a referendum on changing the constitution even though Honduras’ Supreme Court ruled the vote illegal.
The coup was widely condemned by other nations. The United States has pushed for the creation of a truth commission to sort out responsibilities in the coup.
