NEW DELHI - The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) has given the Indian Air Force its clearance for buying 12 helicopters for the use of VIPs, a defence ministry official said Wednesday.

“The VIP chopper deal has been approved and the contract will be signed soon,” the official said.

The deal was stuck with the CCS due to high prices of the helicopters.

The new copters are expected to replace aging Russian Mi-8 helicopters of the VIP squadron based at Delhi’s Palam airport. These 12-tonne choppers were purchased in 1982 by the air force for search and rescue operations and were later converted for VIP transport.
