SRINAGAR - Massive protests erupted in the summer capital Srinagar over the death of a schoolboy Friday, the second such incident in a week, with locals and relatives alleging the boy was shot by security forces without any reason.
Zahid Farooq, a Class 10 student belonging to Nishad area on the outskirts of the city, was carried with a bullet wound Friday afternoon to a hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.
The relatives of the boy claim he was killed by paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers posted in the area when he was playing with other children.
Kashmir Inspector General of Police Farooq Ahmed told IANS that the cause of death of the boy was being ascertained - whether he died due to firing by security forces or some other reason - and a case has been registered.
“The visual examination of the body shows a small wound, which could also be caused by pistol fire. We are, however, keeping our minds open and the cause of the death will be known only after the post-mortem examination.”
High tension has engulfed the area and added to the already volatile situation prevailing here since Sunday when a schoolboy was killed after being hit by tear gas shell in the Old City area.
