Locals bear the brunt as Srinagar shutdown enters fifth day

SRINAGAR - Residents of Srinagar had a tough time as a shutdown in the region entered its fifth day on Friday in protest against the death of a teenager on Sunday.

Wamik Farooq, a resident of Rainawari was killed by a teargas shell in Rajouri Kadal during a clash between the police and a mob on Sunday.

Security arrangements have been made by the authorities at vital places to stop violent protests. The authorities have declared curfew in five areas of the city and locals are not allowed to come out of their houses.

Waseem Malik, a local said, “We had to go to the hospital, we did not know that the curfew is still there. The shops are now closed for the last 4 days. We are facing lot of difficulties.”

Markets were closed and traffic was off the roads, as the normal life remained hit for the fifth consecutive day.

“There is a lot of problem because of this. The curfew is not declared; we do not know how long it is going to remain. I came here and realised that shops are closed,” said another local Mir Majid.

The restrictions were also imposed to prevent separatist groups from holding protest and demonstrations as they had asked the people to celebrate Kashmir solidarity day on Friday.

Many separatist leaders have been kept under house arrest; while over more 70 have been arrested since Thursday. (ANI)
