New military secretary takes over

NEW DELHI - Lt.Gen. G.M. Nair Monday took over as the Indian Army’s new Military Secretary, one of the eight principal advisors to the army chief.
Nair takes over after the retirement of Lt. Gen. Avadesh Prakash, whose court martial has been ordered for his involvement in the land scam in Sukhna Cantonment in West Bengal.
“Nair assumed charge as Military Secretary today (Monday) at Army Headquarters here,” an official statement said.
Nair was General Officer Commanding of 9 Corps in Jammu and Kashmir prior to taking over as the military secretary, who is responsible for the promotions and postings of officers.
Born on Jan 17, 1952, Nair was commissioned into 1/11 Gorkha Rifles (BATALIK) in 1972 after completing training at Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, and has seen active service in several operational areas, including counter-insurgency operations in Assam and Manipur. He commanded an infantry brigade on the western sector during Operation Parakram and a mountain division in Jammu and Kashmir during Operation Rakshak.
Nair has held several important staff, instructional and foreign assignments, including during Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka and as military observer in Namibia.
