MUMBAI - Congress MP Sanjay Nirupam has slammed Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) activists for distributing Marathi language alphabet books to north Indian taxi and auto rickshaw drivers as part of an exercise to teach them Marathi

Nirupam said, “This is all wrong. There is nothing wrong in learning Marathi but no person can threaten the other to forcibly learn a language. There is law and order in this country, and if one takes the law in his hands then action would be taken against them.”

MNS activists had on Monday asked taxi drivers to learn the language within 40 days or else return to their native places.hey had also pasted pamphlets on taxis and auto rickshaws.

The Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party coalition government in Maharashtra had on Wednesday framed new rules for recruitment of new taxi-drivers in Mumbai.

The new rule said a person applying must have fifteen years of domicile Status in Maharashtra.he new rule also stressed that the person must know how to read and write Marathi.

Like every year, Nirupam had organised a wrestling match in Mumbai on Tuesday, where top class wrestlers from across the country participated to prove their might.

The match that was held at Kandivali Thakur stadium witnessed the presence of a large number of sports-lovers.

On the sidelines of the event, Nirupam said, “Wrestling was once an important game in India but now because of cricket, football, tennis, people think that this game is down market, that it’s a poor man’s game, a village game.”

“We are trying to revive it and make it more glamorised so that more and more people take part in it,” he added. (ANI)
