SIRSA - Members of the Dera Sacha Sauda sect organised a mass marriage ceremony for former sex-workers at its headquarters in Sirsa here.

A manager, a trader and two clerks were among those, who got married at the ceremony.

The brides were called as ‘Shubh Devis’ and the grooms ‘Bhagat Yodhas’.

In this ceremony, around five women were married and each newly married couple was handed over a cheque of Rs 150 thousand.

The chief of Dera Sacha Sauda, Gurmeet Singh Rahim, said, “We have dispatched our teams and I am positive that the girls who are helpless and don’t want to live their lives in isolation, will definitely be encouraged towards getting married.”

He added that all women were medically examined prior to the marriage ceremony.

Rahim said, “Earlier, nobody was ready to come forward and get married. When we went to other parts of the country like Mumbai, Bangalore, Rajasthan and New Delhi, there were sex workers in large numbers.

“I think this is god’s wish that they are getting married,” he said adding that these marriages have encouraged many other followers of this sect to marry such socially ostracized women.

Gurmeet claimed that the sect is working towards encouraging the sex workers throughout the country to give up their profession and start a new life.

Gurmeet assured that the sect would take up the responsibility of the restoration of these sex workers and education of their children. (ANI)
