Israeli soldier discharged over protest sign

JERUSALEM — The Israeli military has discharged a soldier for waving a banner at a ceremony protesting the army’s demolition of a West Bank settler outpost.

The military said Tuesday the soldier was dishonorably discharged because he did not express remorse or promise to refrain from similar actions in the future.

The soldier waved the political sign at his unit’s swearing-in ceremony in October at the Western Wall in Jerusalem’s Old City. Another soldier involved was sentenced to 20 days in jail and removed from combat duty.

Military service is mandatory in Israel. The army forbids public political expression by troops.
