SHIMLA - While most of the people in north India are facing the onslaught of cold wave and dense fog, tourists visiting Shimla from different parts of the country are having a gala time.

Recently, an ice-skating tournament was held here to welcome the New Year.

Skaters won appreciation of tourists as they exhibited their skills and entertained the spectators.

“I skated on natural ice for the first time during the All India National Camp. Prior to this, I skated only on artificial ice. I got the chance to learn a lot,” said Damanpreet, a participant, on Thursday.

Organizers also staged a competition to popularise the game, especially among youth.

“Over a hundred youngsters took part in the competition. We are also offering coaching in figure- and speed-skating. We have also organised a competition named All India Open Ice Skating Championship,” said Devesh Banga, Secretary of Shimla Ice Skating Club.

The annual carnival began on December 31 which proved to be big treat for all the tourists who arrived here on the eve of New Year, almost a week ago.

The tournament concluded on Thursday (Jan.7). By Hemant Chauhan (ANI)
