SRINAGAR - Journalists here staged a peaceful protest Friday against a police officer allegedly shooting a photojournalist who was covering the 23-hour Lal Chowk shootout between militants and security forces.

Journalists working for local newspapers, national and international newspapers as well as news agencies demonstrated at the press enclave in Residency Road.

Aman Farooq, a photojournalist working for the local Urdu daily Kashmir Uzma, got a bullet injury in the leg Thursday when he was covering the terror siege of Lal Chowk that ended with two holed up guerrillas being killed.

“A deputy superintendent of police shot and injured me when I was taking pictures of the encounter site yesterday,” Farooq said.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah ordered an inquiry after Kashmir Uzma editor informed him about the incident. He said appropriate action would be taken if the police officer was found guilty.
