Rural entrepreneurs showcase exquisite handicrafts in Tripura

AGARTALA - A 12-day exhibition ‘Saras Mela’ highlighted the rich tapestry of works by rural artisans and craftsmen of Tripura state.
Sponsered by Ministry of Rural Development of the state, the fair aimed at providing a platform to rural artisans and members of various local Self Help Groups.
The local entrepreneurs, mainly handicraft workers and the rural youth, were the main beneficiaries of the fair.
Besides direct retail sales at the stalls displaying various artefacts, the young entrepreneurs are getting bulk orders too.
Representatives of the Local self-help group said that the event was a great effort on the part of the government..
“In the fair we get a great variety and unusual collection, that is why people visit and participate in this fair. Moreover, the price is also very reasonable for the visitors and they come in large numbers. The sellers are also benefited.” said Kakali Das, a visitor.
The authorities of the State Rural Development Department opine that the exhibition have opened a whole new dimension in proper pricing and promotion of rural handicrafts and other products.
“For the first time large number of groups have participated in the fair. We aim at providing the market facility to these people without any middleman.” said Nepal Sinha Commissioner, Rural Development Department of Tripura.
The members of various non-government organisations operating in Agartala maintain that the participation in the exhibition has given a fillip to the confidence and enthusiasm of rural artisans. (ANI)
