SUARAT - Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has slammed the central government for failing to tackle the Maoist violence.

Addressing a public meeting here on Sunday, Modi said: “They (central government) have not been able to fulfill the responsibility assigned to them. Day and night we are witnessing Maoists attacks and thousands are getting killed everyday. And the government is just holding meetings and making false promises.

Doesn’t the common man deserve security? Shouldn’t the common man live a peaceful life? Shouldn’t the common man progress? But no, they (central government) have to dirty game of politics,” he added.

Over 140 people died and about 290 were injured in Friday’s train mishap in West Bengal’s West Midnapore District.

Last month, 76 police personnel were killed in an ambush in one of the deadliest attacks in years.

The Maoists are active in rural areas of central and eastern India and often attack railway lines and mining operations to cripple economic activity, such as the transportation of coal to power and steel plants.

The rebel movement started as a peasant revolt in Naxalbari village in West Bengal in 1967, giving Maoists the local name of “Naxals” or “Naxalites”.

The rebels say they are fighting for the rights of the poor and marginal farmers and landless labourers. (ANI)
