ULFA asks Centre to release its leaders for peace talks

GUWAHATI - The banned United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) has appealed to the Union Government to free its jailed leaders so as to take a final decision on the proposed peace talk.

Welcoming the Assam Government’s decision on holding peace talks, the outfit’s publicity Secretary Mithinga Daimary, said in a statement that his organisation never favoured a negotiation without its leader Paresh Baruah.

Daimary who is currently out on bail, has released the press statement to local media.

In the statement, Daimary said it is up-to the government to create a peaceful atmosphere for talks.

He claimed that the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) had always been favouring a political dialogue to fulfil its demands.

Commenting on the recent visit of Union Home Minister P Chidambaram to Assam, Daimary described his views as a positive.

The statement of the outfit came after a meeting of the general council chaired at the Guwahati Central Jail

Reportedly, jailed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) leader Arabinda Rajkhowa presided over the meeting on Friday.

The meeting was said to be held to discuss on the Government’s peace talk offer.

Among the United Liberation Front of Asom’s 15-member general Council, six are in judicial custody.

Two have been released on bail while one died and five others are missing since the Bhutan operation in 2003. (ANI)
