Summary Box: Stocks give up gains after euro drops
LATE REVERSAL: A slumping euro upended a stock market advance Wednesday. The drop in the currency came after a report that China might re-examine its holdings in European government debt.
DOW DROP: The Dow Jones industrial average ended down 69 points for its first close below 10,000 since February. It had been up 135.
ECONOMIC GAINS: Stocks initially climbed on U.S. government reports that orders for big-ticket manufactured goods and new homes sales rose last month. That raised expectations in early trading that the economy was still recovering.
