STORY: A family in India’s southern Kerala state mourned the loss of five members including two children, who died in the plane crash in southern Mangalore city.

The grief-stricken family belongs to Kottapuram Ullal near Mangalore. The deceased are

Muhammed Naushad (25), Muhammed Ashraf (42), Maimuna (28), Abdullah (6) and Aisha (2).

Naushad was to be married on June 13.

“In total, five members have died - two brothers, wife of a brother, and two children. One was four years old, another was two years old. It is happening because of God’s will so there is no point in expressing grief. Nobody can stop such things from happening,” said Ajeeb Rahman, a member of the family.

The Air India Express Boeing 737-800 passenger plane from Dubai, with 166 passengers and six crewmembers on board, overshot the runway and crashed outside Mangalore airport on Saturday (May 22) at around 6.30 am (local time).

Television images showed the plane ablaze in a forested area. It is India’s worst air accident in years.

The last major crash in India was in July 2000, when an Alliance Air Boeing 737-200 crashed into a residential area during a second landing attempt in the eastern city of Patna, killing at least 50 people.
