MICHIGAN (GaeaTimes.com)- Lawrence Rubin, who was involved with the Mackinac Bridge right from its birth three decades ago breathed his last this Tuesday at the age of 97. It is said that Lawrence Rubin was so much in love with the bridge that he even built two homes overlooking the Mackinac Bridge in order to remain close to the site he so adored.
Lawrence Rubin may have been in the profession of advertising and also arranged campaigns for former governor Murray Van Wagoner, but this did not prevent him from funding the construction of the Mackinac Bridge and becoming its first executive secretary even when he was still at his job of advertising and publicity. After working as the director of the Michigan Good Roads Federation, Mr. Rubin was employed under the Mackinac Bridge Authority, probably after realizing his immense contribution to the building of the bridge four years earlier.
After becoming the executive secretary, Lawrence Rubin decided to shift to Detroit in order to remain near the bridge. He was then given the responsibility to sign bonds. Considering that the number of bonds that he had to sign were quite large, Mr. Rubin had to give up three days to this task itself. The man remained with the Mackinac Bridge Authority for a period of thirty four years, after which it really became hard for him to leave the place. It was then that Lawrence Rubin decided to build a house overlooking his favorite Mackinac Bridge. He may have been sick and in bed for the last days of his life, maybe it was the sight of the bridge which saved him from dying sad.
