Summary Box: Google wins clearance for an ad deal
CLOSE CALL?: U.S. regulators worried that Google Inc.’s $750 million acquisition of the mobile ad service AdMob would make Google even more powerful in the advertising business. But the regulators still let the deal proceed.
THE JUSTIFICATION: The Federal Trade Commission said its concerns were assuaged by the presence of another big player in the market for ads shown on mobile devices. That company is Apple Inc., which bought an online mobile ad service of its own in January.
WATCH THIS SPACE: Google believes advertising on mobile devices eventually will be as lucrative as ads on computer screens.
