MUMBAI, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- The motormen of the Central and Western railways in Mumbai are on a hunger strike today over demands of a higher pay scale and higher allowances, reported the Mumbai railway officials. Trains being the lifeline of the city, it is expected that the strike would cause much trouble especially because of the fact that today is a working day. However, the latest reports suggest that trains in the route are running in their assigned schedule. It has been reported that the motorman strike in Mumbai has not caused much trouble.
With about 65 lakh commuters availing the services of the Central and Western railways, the government has made alternative plans to make sure that the people are not affected in any way. The Central Railway PRO has made an announcement saying that Mumbai’s bus services BEST and MSRTC will arrange for a larger number of buses ferrying across the central and western parts of Mumbai. Another assurance in the motorman strike in Mumbai comes from the fact that certain employees who are a part of unions will not take part in today’s hunger strike.
The government version in today’s case is that the railway employees’ demands are difficult to be fulfilled chiefly because of the fact that the Sixth Pay Commission has already been announced. Therefore to make further changes in their pay scales is next to impossible. The motorman strike in Mumbai is likely to cause the maximum damage during the afternoon and evening hours when train services will be the least. However, passengers have been informed and will possibly make alternate arrangements.
