Big turnout witnessed during Tripura ADC polls

KHUMLUNG / MANDAI - Polls for the sixth council of Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) were held under tight security here on Monday.

Of the total 162 aspirants in the fray, there are 10 women.

There were 6,36,169 voters who exercised their franchise at 1006 polling booths.

The polling started at 7 a.m.

The polls witnessed a big turnout as the voters had started arriving since 7.00 o’clock in the morning at the polling centres.

There was a good public response in comparison to previous years this time in the polls, especially from the women voters who turned up in big numbers at the centers.aba Kumar Debbarma, an aged voter said, “We have come here to vote which started right at 7 in the morning. Till now it is going on very systematically.

There is a long queue of voters here as people turned out in good numbers. There are adequate security personnel.”

Promila Debbarma, a new voter, said: “It was a new experience for me. Here the number of women voters is more compared to the men. I think as the security is good and it is peaceful more people came to vote.”

Meanwhile, polling at one seat had to be postponed after a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate died due to dog-bite.

The ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M)-led Left Front, the Congress and the Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT), a tribal based party, are the dominant players.he BJP and Trinamool Congress have also put up candidates for 22 and 13 seats respectively while 43 independents are in the fray.

Till noon about 65 per cent turn out was recorded and there was no report of any untoward incident.

For the first time, photo identity cards were made compulsory for voters.

The authorities sealed the 856-km-long India-Bangladesh border with Tripura and deployed over 15,000 paramilitary and state security forces across the state.

Night curfew has been clamped in some areas while over 3,000 people have been detained as a precaution according to official source. By Pinaki Das (ANI)
