NEW DELHI, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- The residents in the capital of India are having a tough time with the mercury soaring over 40 degree Celsius and weathermen saying the heat wave will prevail for some time. On Friday Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 42.9 degrees Celsius and the met office said this was the highest of the date since the previous 5 years. The weathermen are of the opinion that the scorching temperature is owing to the lack of any powerful western disturbance in the capital and adjacent states.
The residents of Delhi will get no respite from the soaring temperature in the weekend as well. The last two days of the week may see the maximum temperature exceeding 42 degree mark. To add to the plight of the residents, the scorching heat was accompanied by intermittent power cuts in Delhi. Some areas experienced power cut for several hours. The Delhi power department officials revealed that this year the average demand has shot up to 3,900 MW. It was 3100 MW last year.
To cope with the unprecedented situation Chief Minister of Delhi, Sheila Dikshit has made an appeal to the Center for additional power supply. She has sent a letter explaining the situation to Sushilkumar Shinde, the Union Power Minister. However, the Centre has not sent its reply yet. Rajendra Kumar, the Delhi Power Secretary said that the Union Ministry is likely to send a reply soon. Last year Delhi survived the power cuts as the Centre supplied 300 MW power. The temperature being so high, the usage of air coolers and air conditioners has shot up, resulting in the power outage.
