Summary Box: Dow nears 11,000 but doesn’t cross it
INCHING CLOSER: As it had the day before, the Dow Jones industrial average on Tuesday came within a dozen points of the 11,000 mark before backing off. It ended down 4 points.
BANKING ON GAINS: Shares of regional banks Regions Financial Corp. and SunTrust Banks Inc. rose on upbeat comments from analysts and helped lift the market. Credit Suisse raised its price target on Regions and said SunTrust could be a takeover target.
FED BOOST: Stocks got a brief lift after minutes from the Federal Reserve’s last meeting indicated that policymakers still believe the economy is improving.
