Summary Box: Verizon winds down FiOS expansion
WHAT’S HAPPENING: Verizon has stopped extending the reach of its fiber-optic TV and Internet service, FiOS.
WHAT IT MEANS: If Verizon hasn’t already started pulling FiOS into your community, you likely won’t get it. Verizon still plans to fulfill commitments to wire New York City, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia.
WHY IT’S HAPPENING: Verizon never committed to taking FiOS to its entire local-phone service area. It’s expensive to install, and the economics don’t seem to favor further expansion.
