Stocks again give up a sizeable gain, close mixed
AN ADVANCE SHRINKS — AGAIN: Stocks were mixed for the second day in a row after giving up a sizeable early advance. Investors are doubtful, given the state of the world economy, that the market will be able to sustain its rally.
THE DOW’S DAY AND WEEK: The Dow Jones industrials closed up 9 points at 10,850.36 after earlier rising 68. But it and other major indexes managed to rise for a fourth straight week.
WHAT’S UP NEXT: Economic data will test the market next week. There will be reports on consumer confidence, manufacturing, and on Friday, the government’s March employment report.
